Since 1969, the Texas Teacher of the Year Program (TOY) has honored excellence in classroom education and provided a forum to showcase many outstanding educators whose efforts and example have inspired their students, their colleagues, and the communities they serve. Texas Teacher of the Year is the highest honor that the State of Texas can bestow upon a teacher. Facilitated by the Texas Association of School Administrators, the Texas Teacher of the Year Program annually recognizes and rewards teachers who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and excellence in teaching.
Every fall, 40 Regional Teachers of the Year are selected -- one elementary and one secondary teacher from each of the 20 Education Service Center regions in Texas. Six finalists are then chosen from among the 40 semi-finalists. Following an interview process, the Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year and Texas Secondary Teacher of the Year are chosen from among the six finalists. One is selected to represent the state in the National Teacher of the Year program. Borger ISD would like to congratulate their two District Nominees, Kacie Kaake, Elementary Teacher of the Year 2019 Nominee and Nick Mears, Secondary Teacher of the Year 2019 Nominee. Kaake teaches 5th and 6th-grade special education math and Mears teaches band at BMS and is Assistant Band Director at Borger High School. An Administrative Committee selected Kaake and Mears. “Borger ISD is proud to honor our 2019 Teachers of the Year: Mrs. Kacie Kaake and Mr. Nick Mears. Mrs. Kaake, our Elementary Teacher of the Year is an exemplary teacher who changes the lives of students by encouraging and nurturing hard work and perseverance. She creates a culture of strong effort in her classroom and students rise to the expectations she sets. Mr. Mears, our Secondary Teacher of the Year, is an expert in his field and is completely committed to his craft and his program. He provides excellence in the band hall and beyond by helping to build Borger ISD’s band program from the middle school. Our district is fortunate to have such dedicated, outstanding educators to work with and learn from!” stated Amy Blansett, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction.

Three Borger High School students were recently awarded Borger Classroom Teachers Association (B.C.T.A.) Scholarships. Every year B.C.T.A. offers scholarships to Borger High School seniors in the amount of $200.00 a semester for a possible maximum of $1,600. One scholarship may be awarded to a BHS student who will be majoring in education. Two other scholarships may be awarded to a current B.C.T.A member’s child majoring in any field. B.C.T.A. offers the fourth scholarship on an “as needed” basis to a Borger ISD employee in the same amount as above. This years’ B.C.T.A members’ winners are Briley Cano and Molly Fite. Briley is the daughter of Michael and Abbie Cano. She will be attending Texas Tech University in the Pre-dental program. Mollie is the daughter of Johnny and Melissa Fite. She will be attending Oklahoma State University majoring in International Business. Marc Diaz was awarded the education scholarship. He will be attending West Texas A & M University majoring in Elementary education. Marc is the son of Gracie Villescas and Adam Diaz.

Borger Independent School District funds two classes per semester for each student that wishes to participate in the dual-enrollment program. Because of this firm commitment to post-secondary education 200 students in the junior and senior classes take around 500 classes each semester. Also, local partnerships with CP Chem, Phillips 66, Solvay and others fund many scholarships for these highly motivated students. At Borger High School, we still believe we can change the world.

Lars Nelson and Hope Sharp returned for the second year in a row to the UIL State Academic Meet in Austin. Lars competed in Science and Hope in Ready Writing. At this level they are competing against eleven other students in Class 4A to determine who medals for the top six places in all events, top teams, and top scores in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. This year Lars placed 3rd overall in Science and 1st for Top Score in Biology and Hope placed 8th in Ready Writing! A HUGE Congratulations to Lars and Hope for an outstanding job in representing Borger High School! Borger High School Graphic Design and Fine Art departments recently competed in the State Vase (visual art scholastic event) art contest in San Marcos on April 27th. To even qualify for State students had to compete at the Regional Area competition at Amarillo High and receive top honors there (a “4” on their artwork) Then, judges chose a certain percentage to represent our Region at the state level from the 4’s, which is a very low amount of artwork chosen to move on. At State level judges once again choose a certain percentage of artwork to receive 4’s, State Medals. All Borger High School students competing brought home State medals! Sophomore, Kayli Spickes was also awarded a $600.00 scholarship in a 3D Div. II workshop she participated in with her unique, creative imagery created with clay. Congratulations to all the students with their exemplary artwork honors! Teachers, Mrs. Kerr, Mrs. Renick, and Ms. Washer are extremely proud of these students. Hard work, creative edge, technical skills, and mega talent put these students at the top along with the other high school artists across the state. Eric Wilson was unanimously named Borger Independent School District’s Athletic Director by School Board members Monday, April 1, 2019. Wilson is currently serving as Pre-K – 12 Principal at Bryson ISD. He has previously been Athletic Director/Head Football Coach at Tulia, Varsity Football Coach and Varsity Baseball Coach at Plainview, Claude Head Football Coach, and Head Baseball Coach at Boyd. Superintendent Chance Welch stated, “We are excited to name Mr. Eric Wilson as our new athletic director. He is a proven administrator with a commitment to the success of all 21 sports we offer. Borger ISD prides itself in being a district that focuses on growth. As a principal, Mr. Wilson led teachers in growing their effectiveness in the classroom, and in the same way, it is our desire that he will grow both the effectiveness of our coaches as well as the success of our various athletic teams. Given our recent bond projects that improved our athletic facilities, Mr. Wilson understands the high expectations of our community for our athletic program. Mr. Wilson also brings experience as an athletic director and head coach of more than one sport. As a coach, he experienced the joy of first-time achievements in school history as well as the challenges faced in a highly competitive environment. With 30 years of experience in education, we look forward to Eric Wilson leading the growth of all our athletic teams to many new achievements.”
