According to the Developmental Studies Center in Oakland, California, “Building a safe and caring community is instrumental to children’s academic, social and ethical development. Students who feel connected to school perform better, and are less likely to engage in problem behavior.” At Paul Belton Early Childhood Center, we strive to build this kind of community with our young population. The faculty and staff want every child to have a feeling of belonging, so we start every day with an activity we call community! The entire school meets every morning in the cafeteria. We come together to sing songs, celebrate birthdays, and honor children who have shown positive behavior. We also stand together to recite the pledge and then take a moment for all to think about family, friends, and members of our community. Many parents also attend our gathering each morning. We welcome the parents because this shows the children that we want parents to be involved in education. Our goal is for parents, students, and staff to feel like partners in education and to feel welcome in our unique community. Our mission statement at Paul Belton is “No one too small, no dream too tall.” Sounds simple, but it speaks volumes. Every child knows they are capable of doing or being anything they want to be. They each have their very own business card with this statement printed on it. This gives the students a sense of ownership and belonging to our special community. It also reminds the student that he or she has a job to do within our school community. That job is to be the best by being honest, positive, polite, respectful and responsible. At Paul Belton, we are building future, successful, community leaders. Come by some morning between 8:00-8:15 to Paul Belton and experience community for yourself. We think you will have a great start to your day! Click HERE to view the Community Schedule. Click the picture below for an idea of what community is like. |
